Pairing Schlage Smart Lock to Z Wave Hub

Pairing Schlage Lock to Aeotec Smart Home Hub and Other ZWave Hubs

If you're having difficulty pairing your Schlage Z Wave lock to your Smart Home Hub or other Z Wave hub it may be due to latent information stored on the lock, either from a previous installation or sometimes even testing from the factory.  While this can happen with other Z Wave devices, normally a factory reset of the device is all you need.  However, we have noted with Schlage locks that a factory reset of the lock doesn't always clear out all information, leaving users frustrated and confused.  Fortunately, there is a step that almost always works to connect this brand of lock (and works wonders for other Z Wave device "situations" as well).  It's called the exclusion tool, and it is does the exact opposite job of adding, or pairing, a device to your Z Wave hub.

Every certified Z Wave hub has the exclusion tool, you just have to know where to find it.  We have provided the instructions for a few of the Z Wave gateways sold here at Z Wave Products.

Here are the instructions for some of the controllers sold by Z Wave Products

Aeotec Smart Home Hub ( SmartThings Hub)
  1. Tap Devices and locate your hub widget (it is in the room/location you chose on first setup)
  2. Open the widget and tap the three dot icon in the upper right corner
  3. Select Z-Wave Utilities
  4. Select Z-Wave exclusion
  5. Follow your device instructions to put your device into exclusion mode
  6. Click done after confirmation
  1. Open Settings
  2. Click Z-Wave Details
  3. Click Z-Wave Exclude
  4. Follow your device instructions to put your device into exclusion mode
Home Assistant using Z-Stick 7 / Atrim Stick
  1. Access the Z-Wave control panel in the Home Assistant app
  2. Click Remove Node from the Z-Wave Network Management
  3. Follow your device instructions to put your device into exclusion mode
  4. Restart Home Assistant and run Heal Network

If you are not able to exclude the device successfully, the issue might be a range issue from the hub to your device.  If that's the case, you may need to move the hub closer to your lock, or look to install a Z Wave range extender, like the Aeotec Range Extender 7. If you were able to successfully exclude the lock, but are still unsuccessful in pairing your Z Wave Schlage Smart lock to your hub we suggest you give us a call.   It might need to be replaced or it could be (GASP) one of the few cases of incompatibility.
